Modernizing the national statistical system

Objective

Meet statistical needs and requirements to monitor progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Goals, in accordance with its global indicator framework, and the national development plans aligned with it.

Overview

The Planning and Statistics Authority adopted a plan to modernize the national statistical system based on various international initiatives, with a focus on:

  • Evaluating the national statistical system and identifying strengths and gaps in the statistical process.
  • Evaluating the availability of SDG indicators.
  • Forming a task force to develop a national plan to produce indicators and monitor SDG implementation.
  • Building a national database of sustainable development indicators, updating it periodically and making it available to users.

The most prominent outputs of the plan include:

  • Developing a platform for sustainable development indicators that displays relevant data disaggregated by social category.
  • Preparing and publishing a report on the SDGs in Qatar in 2022.
  • Adopting the National Quality Assurance Framework for Official Statistics in Qatar, which contributes to the consolidation of statistical methodologies and practices in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations.
  • Developing the “Rased” platform to establish an electronic link with data producers, making it easier for stakeholders to collect and update data.
Challenges
  • Limited availability of SDG statistics and indicators.
  • Difficulty of activating the monitoring and evaluation system to enable follow-up and reporting on progress in implementation.
