Mainstreaming gender equality
Objective
Mainstream gender equality in the VNR in light of the State’s commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Overview
Jordan sought to mainstream gender equality in the 2022 VNR process and report. The country adopted a participatory approach that consisted of forming task forces to assess the progress made in implementing the 17 SDGs. The task forces were then transformed into permanent task forces, and gender equality was included in their terms of reference.
The Jordanian National Commission for Women chaired the Task Force on Gender Equality (SDG 5), and was a member of the Task Force on Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and the Task Force on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16). The Commission reviewed the VNR report from a gender equality perspective.
In addition to reporting on progress in implementing SDG 5, a gender equality perspective has been integrated into most of the SDGs through measures and initiatives that take into account gender disparities and women’s empowerment, including:
- Establishing a national system to monitor and reduce maternal mortality (SDG 3).
- Developing a tool to mainstream gender equality in curricula and textbooks, and train curriculum developers on applying it (SDG 4).
- Adopting a policy that identifies key gender issues in the water sector and opportunities to enhance women’s contribution to water management (SDG 6).
- Launching a gender mainstreaming strategy within the Public Security Directorate (SDG 16).
- Developing a policy to mainstream gender in the plans of ministries and official institutions.
- Establishing a permanent ministerial committee within the Prime Ministry to mainstream gender equality in the work of the Government.
- Developing a national list of 67 SDG indicators related to gender equality.
Challenges
- Limited financial and technical support for the implementation of gender-related projects.
- Limited availability of gender-disaggregated data, particularly on the labour market and the informal sector, the impact of climate change, and sustainable cities and communities.
