Mainstreaming gender equality

Objective

Mainstream a gender equality perspective in the VNR and the entire report, and not just within SDG 5.

Overview

A participatory approach was adopted in the preparation of the VNR, which included workshops and meetings with relevant ministries and stakeholders. Non-governmental organizations engaged in women affairs and representatives of women in the business sector contributed to the preparation of the VNR report.
The participation of the National Council for Women in the National Committee for Monitoring the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals was pivotal in the preparation of the VNR report.
Relevant activities of the National Council for Women include:

  • Issuing a training manual to build the capacities of ministries in relation to mainstreaming a gender equality perspective in all sectors.
  • Developing the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030.
  • Providing information on initiatives undertaken by the Council.

This collaboration has successfully mainstreamed a gender equality perspective in the 2021 VNR report within a number of SDGs, including SDG 16 on peace and security. The report cited examples of initiatives and programmes for women, such as the Egyptian Women’s Health initiative (SDG 3) and the Women-owned MSMEs initiative (SDG 8). A theme in the report was devoted to the challenges facing women’s participation in the labour force.

Challenges
