Involving the Children’s Parliament in the VNR

Objective

Ensure the participation of children in the VNR process, and discuss the content and results of the draft VNR report.

Overview

The Ministry of Economy, Finance and Investment Support organized, in collaboration with other concerned bodies, a series of consultations with a large number of stakeholders as part of the 2021 VNR. One of the consultations was with the Children’s Parliament, which consists of 120 middle school children between the ages of 12 and 16 from all Tunisian Governorates.

The consultations addressed SDGs 1, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 16 and focused on children’s aspirations for what needs to be achieved. Key issues highlighted by children included poverty eradication, universal access to quality education and health care, gender equality, the elimination of violence, decent work and access to justice for all.

The children’s vision for the country was to be prosperous, democratic, and free from poverty and violence, and to ensure quality education for all students, and facilitate access to effective health services and decent work for all.

Challenges

Limited participation of stakeholders, including the Children’s Parliament, in institutional and governance mechanisms.
