Establishing the National Bureau of Statistics
Objective
Strengthen the ability to develop and manage data to fill statistical gaps and support evidence-based planning and policymaking.
Overview
The 2020 Statistics Law established the Somali National Bureau of Statistics as an independent institution tasked with collecting, analysing, evaluating, disseminating and coordinating all national statistical data, to close the gap in primary data. The National Bureau of Statistics replaced the Directorate of National Statistics established by the Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, amid the country’s transition from conflict.
Since its inception, the Bureau has been leading efforts to close statistical gaps in the country. Significant progress has been made in the production of primary data through surveys, which helped track progress in the implementation of the SDGs and the preparation of the 2022 VNR report.
Challenges
- Poor capacity to produce and manage data due to the dissolution of government institutions after 1991.
- Lack of reference data for some sustainable development indicators and scarcity of primary data sources.
