Enhancing statistical production and addressing the SDG data gap

Objective

Improve the governance of public statistics by strengthening the role of the National Institute of Statistics and the statistical system to periodically produce disaggregated economic, demographic, social and environmental statistics.

Overview

In 2018, an analysis of the SDG data gap at the national level was conducted. The analysis showed that 137 SDG indicators were not collected (representing about 56 per cent of total indicators). As a result, Tunisia identified measures to help overcome deficiencies in statistical information on SDG indicators in its 2021 VNR report, including:

• Building human capacity to improve SDG statistical data production.
• Developing solutions to fill the gaps identified in the analytical study, namely:
  • Studying the quality and relevance of existing data.
  • Identifying interlinkages between existing indicators.
  • Developing a strategy to address unavailable indicators, and ensuring that statistical indicators of gender equality issues and the situation of vulnerable groups are tracked and monitored in order to leave no one behind.
  • Developing a roadmap on the methodology for aligning existing statistical tools with SDG indicators.
• Improving the use of administrative data through centralization and digitization, in addition to aligning classifications, definitions, concepts and methodologies used.
• Breaking down national statistical averages in accordance with the criteria set out in the 2030 Agenda.
• Establishing an information system for the SDGs, which requires capacity-building and coordination and integration mechanisms between producers of statistical data. This also requires consolidating the role of the National Institute of Statistics as a technical coordinator and a guarantor of quality for the produced statistics.
• Developing a remote data collection platform that data producers can access to improve monitoring.
